Story
Thanks for taking the time to be here.
I’m raising money for Project 6, a charity that supports people affected by drug and alcohol use, offering recovery-focused services built on care, dignity, and community across South and West Yorkshire.
In my twenties, I struggled with my own drug and alcohol use. Recovery didn’t come from one dramatic turning point, but from learning how to stay — with myself, with other people, and with healthier patterns over time.
Drumming has been part of my life for over 30 years, and it became one of the ways I learned to stay with things instead of constantly trying to change them. Through repetition, listening, and shared rhythm, it offered a sense of steadiness, depth, and connection that grew gradually rather than all at once.
About the Drumathon
The African Drumathon is a long-form drumming challenge built around djembe and dundun rhythms (traditional West African hand and bass drums). It’s not about speed or performance. It’s about staying inside the rhythm, not leaving when things get uncomfortable, and doing it together.
If this story resonates with you, supporting the fundraiser is a simple way to turn that feeling into something practical.
I’ll be drumming continuously for four hours, supported by other drummers and members of the wider community who will be joining in at different points throughout the day.
