Anthony's Marathon for Reducing the Risk

London Marathon 2025 · 27 April 2025 ·
‘Come on, just put your name in the ballot with me, it’s not like you’ll get in…’ Those were the fateful words spoken by my dear fiancée, Sophie. I, with no intention of ever running a marathon did my due diligence before reluctantly agreeing. In 2024 there was a 3.5% chance you would get in through the ballot, this year saw a 2% chance as a record 840,000 applied, safety in numbers… or so I thought..!
Whilst having always been sporty, I’m certainly not a runner's build, adopting the mantra 'I’m built for speed, not distance...' So having never ran more than 12k I picked an ambitious target of sub 3:30 and selected the appropriate training plan. Now just over 4 months and 70 training runs at the time of writing this I’ve conquered 30k and have set sights nearer 3:20 - brave or stupid, I’ll find out on the day!
In honour of Sophie getting me into this mess* (of course I really mean “incredible challenge"), I’ve chosen a charity that she came into contact with through work and one she feels so passionately about.
Reducing the Risk was founded in 2007 with the goal of improving the safety of those at risk through domestic abuse and protecting people vulnerable to abuse and exploitation, adults and children.
Their High Risk Independent Domestic Violence Advisory (IDVA) service works directly with those assessed as being at high risk of significant harm and trauma through abuse.
Alongside their life-changing support for victims and survivors of domestic abuse, Reducing the Risk offers training and guidance on best practice. Seeking to strengthen the ability of communities and professionals to recognise, prevent and support.
Anyone can be a victim of domestic abuse and there are many forms it can take. If you’re able to donate, thank you so much, your donation will help past, current and future victims. Even if you can’t donate please take the time to look at the incredible resource that Reducing the Risk’s website provides, it may change someone’s life.
