Story
On the 13th May this year, Aidan Power; Dad, husband, brother, son, friend, cousin, uncle and coach, passed away after being diagnosed with a rare condition called AL Amyloidosis, only 8 months before.
'Amyloidosis' is a term used when a protein called amyloid is over-produced in the bone marrow creating an ‘amyloid deposit’. Around 3/4 of all patients with AL amyloidosis have these deposits in the heart, making it become stiff and unable to pump blood properly. This 'cardiac amyloidosis' affects how the heart functions making normal daily activity difficult, as it did for Aidan.
In 2012, Aidan completed the Ironman70.3 in Galway! This year, on the 19th August, Thomas and Ciara Power will take part in the Ironman70.3 in Cork to fundraise for AL Amyloidosis research in Ireland. The race includes a 1.9km swim, 90km cycle and 21.1km run.
All of the donations we receive will be donated to Multiple Myeloma Ireland (MMI). MMI is currently the only charitable organisation in Ireland focused exclusively on supporting patients, families and carers with Multiple Myeloma and related conditions such as AL Amyloidosis. MMI is also a member of Myeloma Patients Europe, the umbrella organisation of multiple myeloma and AL amyloidosis patient groups and associations from across Europe.
Thank you from Cathriona, Ciara, Fiona, Thomas and Benny 🐾 x
