A Journey of Strength and Hope: Supporting Sue Ryder
In the face of a journey no one should have to endure, we often find ourselves searching for ways to create meaning, to bring light where there seems to be none. This is my sister Helen’s story—a story of courage, resilience, and a family united by love in the darkest of times.
Helen was 43 years old, a devoted mother to three children aged 7, 10, and 14. Her battle with cancer began in 2021, when a lump was discovered and confirmed to be cancerous. Chemotherapy started immediately, and for a while, it seemed like she was heading towards remission. By the end of 2022, it looked as though we were on the brink of hearing the words "all clear."
But cancer has a way of changing everything. Despite her strength and the months of treatment, Helen's cancer returned, this time advancing to stage four. While chemotherapy and radiotherapy continue to slow its progress, they can no longer defeat it. Now, our focus has shifted to making every moment count—creating memories with Helen, her children, and all of our loved ones. Time is precious, and we are learning to cherish every single second.
Through it all, one thing has become abundantly clear: Helen and our family are not facing this journey alone. The Sue Ryder team have been by our side, offering the support, care, and compassion we desperately need. Their mission is to ensure that everyone approaching the end of life, or living with grief, has access to the support they deserve. And for Helen, that support has been nothing short of life-changing.
The incredible team at Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court in Cheltenham have been instrumental in caring for Helen on a day-to-day basis. Their unwavering dedication and commitment to making Helen’s journey as comfortable as possible have inspired me to act. It is because of their profound impact on our lives that I’ve decided to fundraise for Sue Ryder and express my heartfelt gratitude for everything they do.
On Friday, May 23rd, 2025, I will be having my head shaved during our school’s celebration assembly to raise funds for Sue Ryder. I ask that you please consider sponsoring me in this effort—your donation, no matter the amount, will go directly towards supporting the wonderful staff and services at Leckhampton Court.
Sue Ryder’s care means that no one has to face the challenges of dying or grief alone. Your support will ensure that more families like ours have the strength, comfort, and assistance they need during the toughest of times. The team support us until the very end at 2am, Monday the 19th of May, where Helen peacefully completed her journey and passed away in her sleep.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your generosity and support. Together, we can make a difference.
