Ironman Wales · 22 September 2024

At Alzheimer’s Society we’re working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives. We do this by giving help to those living with dementia today, and providing hope for the future by campaigning to make dementia the priority it should be and funding groundbreaking research.

Story

The Alzheimer's Society helped my parents and their siblings care and support my Gran who had dementia.

The support they gave was invaluable during the years before she died in March 2020.

I am going to do my first Ironman in Tenby later this year, days before I reach the grand old age of 50 and am fundraising for the Alzheimer's Society in memory of my Gran.

An Ironman consists of

* 2.4 mile (3.8 km) swim

* 112 mile (180.2 km) cycle

* 26.2 mile (42.2 km) run

Ironman Wales is considered to be a tough course with hilly bike and run and a long uphill T1 (transition between swim and bike)

The bike course in Wales has 6,889 ft (2,100 m) elevation, whereas the run course as 1,352 ft (412 m) elevation!

This will be a huge challenge for me as I will not have run a marathon at all, let alone one after a long swim and bike!

Alzheimer’s Society work towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives, by giving help to those living with dementia today, and providing hope for the future.
