Hackney Half Marathon 2024 · 19 May 2024 ·

Our funding is helping African giant pouched rats, nicknamed HeroRATs, (and HeroDOGs) to find landmines. HeroRATs are also detecting TB as part of an integrated approach. When deployed alongside standard methods, they speed up the process, getting people’s lives back on track.

Story

It’s that time of year again when I’m running the Hackney Half - and I’m again doing it for a charity that does some amazing, life-changing work around landmine clearance.

APOPO train these incredibly intelligent African Giant Pouched rats to sniff out mines. (In 20 mins they can search an area that would take 4 days with a metal detector.)

They’ve been working for years in Cambodia and various countries across Africa, and they’re now also doing really valuable work in Ukraine. Their work saves lives and prevents horrible injuries.

If you can spare a few quid, it’ll be much appreciated! And it might help inspire me to train a bit harder.
