We Provide funds for local cancer research to Improve the lives of cancer patients

Story

Dad and I are riding our motorbikes from Alaska to Argentina (and hopefully further if all goes to plan!). Whilst doing this, we would love to raise some money for Hope Against Cancer. They are a local charity that raise money for clinical cancer trials and research. Please see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BMg6uxCALpw&t=3s for a brief introduction to Hope.

Like many others, my family have been touched by cancer. My Mum has had lymphoma and both my Grans passed away due to bowel and breast cancer. We would love to support Hope to aid their research that benefits cancer patients world wide.

Any amount, small or large, would be of great benefit to the charity and will support funding at the trials centre for vital pieces of equipment such as infusion pumps. Hello all, now dad and I are one month into our journey, I thought I best give an update on here!

You can support by donating, following Hope Against Cancer on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/hopeagainstcancer or on Instagram at @HopeAgainstCancer https://www.instagram.com/hopeagainstcancer/.

We will be documenting our journey on Instagram @LauraRidesBikes https://www.instagram.com/lauraridesbikes/.

Wow, One month. Where has time gone?!? Our journey so far has been incredible, meeting some fantastic individuals, getting to grips with the bike and getting to see some amazing views.

Driving from Anchorage to McCarthy resulted in both dad and I desperately avoiding all potholes and riding on both tarmac and gravel in order to get a photo in front of the glacier. A fuel stop and cabin visit later, we were ready to hit the roads to start the Denali Highway.

Denali Highway was utter heaven! Some unbelievable views, a highlight of the ride so far.

A short stop in Fairbanks… the Dalton Highway awaits. Both of us were nervous but excited.

Inside the Artic circle!!! We made it… covered in mud and riding through the rain but all worth it in the end. Unfortunately, the trip up to Dalton ended prematurely. A week of heavy rain and overnight rainfall caused the safety levels of certain parts of the road to be deemed extremely unsafe. However disappointing, safety is key, and we looked forward to Canada!

A couple, Jim and Michele kindly invited us to stay over in Fairbanks having previously met them on our trip. Jim took us up in his float plane, something I certainly did not expect on our trip through Alaska! It was incredible, so a huge thank you to them both for this.

Our next ride saw us take on the ‘Top of the World Highway’ taking us into Canada, ending our Alaskan journey, Finishing an amazing day of riding in Dawson city. It was here we planned on setting off to explore West BC however fires prevented this and a surprise journey along the Alaskan highway awaited.

Our time in Canada then came to an end, not as planned due to various fires and road closures, however we had an amazing time.

So far so good with regards to mine and dad’s friendship! A few complaints and a little bicker over some keys (found in his bag, obvs) we are getting along well and loving every minute! A couple of things to note… one bike has been consuming a fair amount of oil and dad rode over his glasses, lol!

We have funded over 100 research projects tackling many forms of cancer. In 2012 we opened a dedicated clinical trials centre at Leicester Royal Infirmary to offer patients access to new medicines and therapies. We also fund two nurses who add to the care and support trials patients receive.
