Story
THE CHALLENGE:
Climbing 8,848m (height of Everest), on skis, over 4 days.
We will be skinning up 8-12 hours, equivalent of 3 marathons in energy expenditure, per day!
THE WHY:
Last March, our family friend John was planning an active, adventure-filled retirement—sailing the high seas with his wife Jenny and reconnecting with family and friends. Then, life took a sudden turn. A seizure led to a diagnosis of Stage 4 Glioblastoma, a devastating brain cancer with grim survival rates and treatments unchanged for 30 years.
Instead of plotting ocean routes, John’s days are now filled with surgeries, chemo, radiotherapy, and countless tests. But John isn’t letting cancer define him. In true indomitable spirit, he’s taking on the above challenge!
THE USE OF FUNDS:
The Brain Tumour Charity will be using money raised to fund groundbreaking research into novel treatments.
A WORD FROM JOHN:
Training around hospital appointments and setbacks has been tough, but knowing we can make a difference makes it worth it. I’m amazed by the progress in areas like AI and immunotherapy, and I can’t wait for this challenge—climbing Everest’s height with a fantastic group of friends for a cause that matters. What could be better?
HOW YOU CAN HELP:
This is where you come in. Glioblastoma affects more than 4,500 people every year in the UK, young and old alike. Wider than that, cancer could touch any of us, with 1 in 2 people projected to face cancer at some point in their lives. I have felt it too with my mother suffering from breast cancer.
Please, give generously. Together, we can make an impact.
