Folding a thousand origami cranes · 1 July 2024

Weavers Adventure Playground aims to provide a welcoming safe and friendly environment for all 8 – 16 year olds, five days a week, where children come first. We aim to provide a range of play opportunities to suit individual needs. Play workers work to the play principles, where children lead their own play and where they are encouraged to be involved in making choices on how they would like the playground. We aim to be all inclusive and meet the developmental needs of all our users. We intend to support inclusion by meeting the specific requirements of each individual child to enable them to build on their talents, interests, abilities and extend their experiences. Our members of staff are committed to building professional and supportive relationships with our users in order to enable play to happen. Children under 8 are welcome if accompanied by a parent / carer at all times.

Story

I am taking part in the Mayer Brown's London office fundraising competition in support of Weavers 50th Anniversary.

One of the firm's fundraising partners, Weavers Adventure Playground, are celebrating 50 years since first opening their doors. In support of this, the firm is hosting a 50th anniversary fundraising competition in the London office, with an ambitious target of £10,000 - equivalent to the cost of all staff at Weavers for 50 days.

To support this cause, I have committed myself to folding 50 origami cranes over 20 working days in July, starting on 1 July and finishing 26 July. This would result in a total of 1,000 cranes being folded - known as senbazuru. Completion of this feat is associated with good health, fortune, peace, and wishes becoming true - all of which correspond to the values promoted by the continued operation of Weavers.

Each completed crane will be displayed in my office, and each pound donated to the campaign entitles you to take one - hopefully providing nice decoration for your working area and spreading awareness of the campaign. A thousand cranes would also equal 10% of the firm's ambitious fundraising target. (If you are already quite content with the look of your desk, do not worry - unclaimed cranes will be well cared for, and your donation will be appreciated anyway!)

Why should you donate?

Weavers make a huge difference to children across Tower Hamlets, which has the highest child poverty rate in the UK. Unfortunately, in recent years they have struggled to keep their doors open, now relying heavily on supporters like Mayer Brown. By making a donation, you can make a tangible difference to this small and incredibly worthy charity.

5 cranes could provide a meal for two children

20 cranes could cover travel expenses for a day out

32 (and a half!) cranes could cover utilities for a day

50 cranes could provide a sports coach for two hours a week

255 cranes could cover the full running costs for a day
