We provide the best possible care to people affected by life limiting illness

Story

To me, my dad was the strongest man in the world.

From Being little and seeing him beat M Byson on street fighter, to watching him train like a beast in the garage on his boxing bag.

He always encouraged me to be active, it was an something we both really enjoyed doing together. From running, swimming, football and then later boxing.

The time and effort my paps put into teaching and training me to be a fighter has become such a treasured memory, and is the core of who I am today.

He gave up so much of his time to train not just me, but so many others at our old gym Cleckheaton boxing academy run by Keith Tate. We both made life long friends from that club.

The Last few years have been so difficult, no matter whats been going on in my life, my dad has always been my rock and strength. He pushed me and coached me in life when I couldn't do it for myself.

The last Christmas eve we had together we went for a walk and talk, to try and articulate our goodbyes as we knew he had limited Time.

He told me this was his last coaching lesson and I'd be ok without him.

We'd done all the ground work and when he left me I'd be strong enough to carry on.

I'm shaking my head as I write this and smiling. I don't think he understood how much I needed him. I told him I wasn't ready for him to leave me, he said he didn't have a choice.

This conversation plays on repeat in my head daily.

He got really sick really quick, the cancer spreading all over.

He'd stayed active the entire time, he never gave up his running or training. And when that got too much, he would pace around the house.

I don't know anyone who was as mentally strong, fierce and determined as he was.

He went to Kirkwood, and as much as you hope you never need to be there, they were amazing to him.

He was so thrilled with their care, kindness and compassion he'd ask me to bring treats in for them. So I'd bring the night staff Pizza in from Dolce Vita restaurant in Thornhill.

Kirkwood were so accommodating, myself and other family members were able to stay over night with him and care for him our selves, as much as we could.

All made possible by the facilities at the kirkwood.

He quickly started crunching numbers (everyone who knows him knows he was a financial advisor in his younger years)

He'd Ask how much things cost, and would try and figure away that would be cheaper for them through people he knew.

He asked us all to help raise money to aid the kirkwood.

Last year, family and friends did walks, training sessions and cycled to raise money and they absolutely smashed it.

All in his memory x

I didn't feel ready to do something from me.

The whole process felt insane because he never should have been sick, he never should have died. He should still be here.

But almost a year later, I feel ready.

So I'm doing my 1st triathlon on May the 6th to do my bit For my dad, Paul "Dazzler" Wild.

Born to be Wild pappy. Always.
