Story
In memory of a special boy Alfie Anthony, we have created the group ‘Alfie’s adventures for ARFID’ doing multiple fundraising activities for a charity very close to our hearts supporting people with ARFID and preventing further loss.
Alfie was 1 in a million, he found beauty in the smallest things in life, the things most of us take for granted. Alfie was diagnosed with Autism at the age of 3. Although he was non verbal we had our own secret language that only Mummy & Alfie (& those closest to us) really understood. He was the happiest little boy, always smiling, bouncing, stimming and very cheeky. He definitely opened our eyes to what really matters in life and even though his life was cut too short, we made the best memories that we will hold onto forever.
Alfie had Autism and struggled with various sensory issues, weaning him onto solid food was impossible he would vomit, choke and become very distressed at any new textures that were offered to him. He kept a formula milk diet for the majority of his life with soft bland baby food and plain biscuits. He would eat weetabix, porridge and loved custard. Despite all the appointments and the constant chasing people, with concerns for Alfies intake voiced and not heard, there were no guidelines for the Eating Disorder he was diagnosed with after he passed.
Everything was put down to his Autism, and our aim is to make the world see that ARFID is a separate and much more severe diagnosis. Changes need to be Implemented now not only to save lives of others, but because our children deserve access to medical treatment regardless of their special needs. Alfies story has already had an impact on so many people since it was aired on the BBC, ITV and MEN (links with more information regarding Alfie’s story below) . Alfie has left a legacy & we will do our upmost to shout loud enough on his behalf so that Parents have something to signpost their children towards, without being fobbed off as an Autistic Trait.
ARFID AWARENESS UK is the UK’s only registered charity dedicated to raising awareness and furthering information about Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder.
