In March this year I will be celebrating six years living in Kenya and working for S.A.F.E. During this time, I have had the privilege of meeting and working with some of the most incredible people and watching their hard work and efforts change lives.
A particular highlight has been watching the girls from our scholarship programme grow and thrive. These girls overcame significant challenges to finish primary school, only to be faced with the reality of not being able to keep studying because their family could not afford the fees. Our scholarship project is transformative for girls in this situation because not only do we pay their school fees, but we also provide mentorship, careers guidance and life skills - giving the girls the best chance of finishing their education and then going onto further education and employment.
One such girl is Seina, who I have had the pleasure of getting to know and see flourish over the past six years. Seina finished primary school at the top of her class, but her parents were not able to take her to secondary school as they lacked the fees. S.A.F.E. sponsored her fees, and provided support and mentorship throughout her years at school. She finished school with a B and is now at University doing her degree in accountancy. When she finishes - Seina wants to join S.A.F.E.'s finance team and help other girls like her achieve their goals and ambitions. Without this scholarship, Senia's only option would have been to marry young and start a family. Instead, she is on track to finish university and go onto a career building her own community and others like it. There is no exaggerating the power of sending a girl to school.
Therefore, I can think of no better way of celebrating six years with S.A.F.E. than climbing Mount Kenya to raise money for these girls.
Anyone who knows me will know that I am not athletically gifted... and six years of living at sea level has not greatly improved my fitness levels... So please sponsor me and make all the tears and mid mountain meltdowns worth it.
