Story
2024 is the year that I turn the big 3-0 and like any person having an early life crisis, I have decided to put my body through its paces and take on one endurance challenge for each decade of my life so far:
1. London Marathon, April
2. Sprint Triathlon, Blenheim Palace, June
3. 70.3 IRONMAN, September
The final event will see me attempt to swim 1.9km, bike 90km and run 21km across a mountainous route (because doing what currently seems impossible will at least be character building).
Until only a few months ago, I couldn't put my head under water, didn't own a bike and prided myself on the fact that 'I will never be a runner.' My 'warm up' training has however seen me swim my first 2km, complete several outdoor rides and some far more boring ones on the turbo (with only a couple of minor cleat incidents) and run over 200km.
BUT the training is only just getting started..
I will be raising money for the Galactosaemia Support Group (GSG), my target - £7030 (the equivalent of how many miles I will have to endure to become a 70.3 IRONMAN..).
Galactosaemia is a disorder that affects how the body processes a simple sugar called galactose, which mainly comes from lactose, the sugar found in milks. Galactosaemia is a rare condition, affecting around 1 in 45000 births.
The GSG brings families with galactosaemic children and adult galactosaemics together and offers support where most needed. They are a vital source of information on a condition which lacks research and information due to its rarity.
It is a disorder which has directly affected my family and I have witnessed first hand the importance of the GSG in supporting children and families. Any money raised will be extremely valuable for the charity.
