Solo & unsupported Arctic ski crossing

The Refugee Council is the nation’s refugee charity. Together with community groups, partners and volunteers, we help people who have escaped war and persecution to rebuild their lives, integrate into communities, and play their part in Britain.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

In March, I will attempt a 4-week solo and unassisted crossing of the Norwegian Arctic with nothing but skis and a sled, fundraising for the Refugee Council.

If we have met before, then chances are you had to sit through and listen to my stories of motorcycling across Mongolia, getting appendicitis in Argentinian mountains, or trekking across New Zealand South Island - to name a few.

This year, I decided to take on a new challenge. Seeking the last remote and untouched bits on Earth, I am heading to the Arctic. I will attempt a solo North-South crossing of the Finnmark plateau in Northern Norway, and some other far removed sections. Conditions are simple: full autonomy, no civilization or escort, camp along the way and, above all, be in awe of our bewitching Nature and its flashing green skies.

While I am paying for the trip myself, I am taking this opportunity to fundraise for the Refugee Council - a UK based organization providing support and advice to refugees and asylum seekers. Having been involved with refugee associations, this cause is close to my heart. We are in dire need of humanity and warmth in these times, and the Refugee Council is doing critical work, providing material support, helping with social insertion and supporting refugees’ mental health.

In the words of Hannah Arendt: “While strength is the natural quality of an individual seen in isolation, power springs up between men when they act together and vanishes the moment they disperse.”
