Story
I’m raising money for Barnsley Hospice because they are now caring for the man I’ve loved for 13 years, the love of my life Darren. A 43‑year‑old dad to three boys, and the hardest‑working, most selfless person I’ve ever known. In February 2026 he became poorly, and none of us imagined how quickly things would change. We were told he had cancer, and within weeks it had spread rapidly. By May, we were facing the words no family ever wants to hear stage 4 metestatic disease.
This is a man who has spent his whole life putting everyone else first. He’s worked hard, day in and day out, to provide for us and for his children. He’s the the best kind of dad, tired, busy, stressed, it never mattered. If his boys needed him, he was there. If we needed something, he made it happen. He’s never complained, never asked for anything, never taken a day for himself. He’s always been the strong one, the steady one, the one holding everything together.
Seeing him now, so unwell, is heartbreaking in a way I can’t put into words. Our world has changed so fast we’re still trying to catch our breath. But Barnsley Hospice has stepped in with compassion, dignity, and care at a time when we needed it most. They are helping him stay comfortable, supporting us as a family, and giving us moments of peace in the middle of something we never imagined facing.
I'm fundraising because they deserve every bit of support we can give. They are helping the man who has always helped everyone else. And they are helping us make the time he has left as gentle and meaningful as possible. Every donation, no matter the size, means another family like ours gets the care, comfort, and kindness they desperately need.
Barnsley Hospice provides specialist palliative and end of life care to adults in Barnsley living with a progressive life-limiting illness, and the people close to them.
