Story
Thank you for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
As many of you may know, my loved one is currently battling Stage 4 Diffuse Large B Cell Lymphoma. Unfortunately, chemotherapy ceased to be effective midway through treatment at home, leaving us with the only option of a CarT cell transplant. This treatment is not available in Northern Ireland, but we were fortunate to be referred to the Haematology unit at Addenbrooke’s Hospital.
From our very first encounter with the team at Addenbrooke’s, we felt like we were treated with utmost care and respect. The CarT therapy is crucial because his cells are unable to recognize the cancer cells as harmful. Therefore, T cells are extracted from his blood and sent to a lab for modification so that they can effectively target and destroy the cancer cells upon reintroduction into his body.
In June, he underwent the procedure to have his cells removed at Addenbrooke’s, which were then sent to the US for modification. On July 30th, those modified cells were placed back into his body at Addenbrooke’s and are now beginning to work their magic.
The Haematology Comfort Fund plays an essential role in enhancing patient experiences on the wards by providing additional resources such as furniture, essential medical equipment, welcome packs, and a tuck shop that offers snacks and beverages. We have greatly benefited from this tuck shop during our time on ward C10; it has been a lifesaver for families who need refreshments without having to leave the ward.
