The Outpatients Team are taking part in this years Belfast Marathon relay race to raise much needed funds for Amy’s House. Amy’s House is a Home from Home for families to stay close to their children who are receiving cancer treatment. Amy House opened in January 2016. It is only five minutes’ walk from Belfast City Hospital. The house has five bedrooms with en-suites, two living rooms where families can interact and share stories and support each.

Recently a nephew (Alex Ruddy) of one of the team members found out that he had osteosarcoma in his left leg in January 2024. Alex had travel a long distance each day until he was introduced to Amy’s House. Alex spent eight months receiving chemotherapy every week as an in-patient in Cancer Centre, Belfast City Hospital. Alex’s mum and dad had the opportunity to support Alex and be there for him through this horrible time thanks to Amy’s House and their kindness.

Alex received good news in October 2024 that the chemotherapy was successful and was able to go home. Sadly this was short lived and Alex’s cancer returned very quickly in November 2024. The decision was quickly taken that Alex had to have his left leg removed to save his life. Alex had his operation December 2024, a couple of weeks before Christmas. Now in January 2025 Alex is doing extremely well and is working very hard on his rehabilitation.

Alex’s mum and Dad want to say a special thank you to ALL the team within the Cancer Centre who helped Alex through this very difficult time. And a very special thank you to Amy’s House for allowing them to be there for Alex when he needed them most.

Help us raise as much money as possible foe a fantastic place of support for many families going through tough times.
