1 in 5 children in the UK are affected by their parents' alcohol problems. They are often frightened and isolated, with no one to turn to for help. Nacoa responds by providing a free, confidential telephone, 1-2-1 chat and email helpline.

Story

I've been very lucky to get a place to run the London marathon again and I'll be running in memory of my mum who we lost 30 years ago to alcoholism.

After a tricky time with my own mental health in the past year or so, I am slowly, finally starting to understand the effect her illness and early death had on me and how it has shaped me as a person. And it goes without saying that I miss her every day and think about all those things she wasn't able to be a part of....weddings, grandchildren and just catching up for a cup of tea.

Still in 2026, alcoholism is a misunderstood disease and sadly there are many children living with parents who are addicted to alcohol, with little access to help or support.

This is where Nacoa come in as they have a helpline offering advice, support and an understanding ear, to children affected by their parents' drinking where they can talk freely about their fears and worries.

Nacoa receive no funding from government and rely on donations from the public to keep the helplines open.

Nacoa say - We believe that every child has the right to a happy childhood and to live a creative and meaningful life but when drink is the family secret they are more likely to experience family violence, neglect and other problems in their own homes.

Please donate if you can ask you could make a real difference to those children who would otherwise struggle in silence.
