Story
I am walking the London Marathon 2025 for the Royal Osteoporosis Society.
Why a marathon?
I did my first triathlon in 2017 and fell in love with the sport. I was rubbish, but I didn't care. It became my life.
Then in 2021 I broke my ankle and my world fell apart.
As well as a difficult recovery - I could still barely walk after 6 months - I was diagnosed with osteoporosis.
Over the last 2.5 years I have gradually recovered some fitness. I can still swim (hurrah!) but I have lost all confidence cycling and running is difficult due to my ankle. So triathlon is no longer fun.
But I really miss the buzz of events. And I do love a challenge. So why not enter the buzziest of events - the London Marathon.
As a bonus, London has a really generous cut-off time of 8 hours so is feasible for walkers. I want to walk up the Mall and cross that finishing line with my head held high.
Why Osteoporosis
Few people in the UK really understand what osteoporosis is. I certainly didn't. My diagnosis was a shock and I felt I'd become old overnight.
The ROS were a big help to me. The nurse on their helpline explained everything so much better than my GP could and I've used their advice to adapt my exercise routines to protect and strengthen my bones.
Osteoporosis can have a massive impact on lives; robbing those affected of self-confidence, reducing independence and making everyday activities a challenge.
ROS are driving research for the development of new medications and treatments to beat osteoporosis.
We dream of a future with no more broken bones and no more broken lives. You can help make it a reality by sponsoring me today.
