Story

Good afternoon All, Update 4th June 2025

Wee update on where we are at the moment.

The venue for the Charity Golf Event is - Broadlees Golf. Chapelton, Strathaven. Postcode for satnav users is ML10 6GH. It is well sign posted from both directions.

All golfers and scorers are being asked to wear a red top for the event.

There will be the use of photographs and possible video on the day by Sarah, who will be using it for our Esteem Social Media. Anyone who does not want to have themselves included on any social media by photo or video, can you please inform us prior to the event.

There will be a photographic opportunity at the outside part of the driving range where all players and scorers can gather round May(wife) as she hits the final ball

When you arrive at the event, please park in the footgolf area near the marquee. The briefing will take place there with golfers and scorers.

All golfers and scorers should be at venue by 8.30am for briefing and allocation of score cards and scorer.

All 18 golfers have been confirmed and there is 6 teams of three players and each team will be allocated a scorer.

All golfers must declare their handicap prior to the event to allow their score cards to be updated in advance of event. What you declare, does not mean that is what you will get. It is to make things fairer for all involved and gives the happy hackers an equal chance of winning. (Kai has been allocated a handicap of 36)

There will be a site measurer on the nominated par 3 hole for nearest the pin.

How it all works

It will be teams of three players. Playing 4 balls.

Each Player uses their own ball to play normal golf scoring rules. The Team Ball is used as alternate shots.

The same player cannot tee off the team ball twice on consecutive holes, must be different player teeing off each time.

The scoring for each player using their own ball will be given to your scorer, this will then be added up, divided by 3 and added to the team card. The team ball score will then be added to the average score.

eg; player one scores 5, player two scores 6, player three scores 7 = 18 divided by 3 = 6 average.

team ball = all three players playing the ball and the team takes 5 shots to get it hole = 5 plus 6 average = total 11.

There is also penalty strokes on the course, nobody will know these except the scorer, also bonus points where your score can be reduced.

If you lose your team ball, you automatically score 12 for each of the remaining holes.

Out of bounds counts as a lost ball as there is farm land around the course.

The declared teams are as follows;

Team Walker

Team CCG

Team SB Services

Team Esteem/Trail West

Team Rugby

In less than two weeks it all becomes reality.

My wife Mary was diagnosed with a Brain Tumour in December 2023, having previously fought through cancer in 2022/23 and beating it through the help, support of family, work colleagues at Esteem Training and medics/nursing staff. She had to suffer the loss of her hair through Chemotherapy, Radiotherapy, an operation and medication before successfully coming through the other side. Then in December 2023, she was having headaches, which the medics put down to symptoms caused by medication, but sent her for a scan to be sure. This was just before Christmas 2023, which should have been a time for celebration (beating cancer and our grand daughters first birthday), but sadly, it was confirmed by the Neurosurgeon at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital who had gone out of his way to phone us just before Christmas to tell us the bad news.

May had a Brain Tumour the size of a Golf Ball. After attending appointments, we were told that they would have to monitor in order to see any growth patterns. This was to be over the next few months. Then on 18th April 2024, we got the news that it had grown by 4mm over this period, and it would require an operation to have it removed. May's final consultation with her Neurosurgeon took place on 18th June where it was explained. If May did not have the operation then the speed it was growing would cause death. If she plumped for the operation, then the risks were high, where risks included stroke, bleed on the brain, seizures, death. We were caught between a rock and a hard place. As she had our Daughters wedding (see photo) to attend in July, it was discussed between us and the Neurosurgeon that we could get the wedding and any holiday plans by with first.

May had a very successful operation on 29th October 2024 to remove the tumour with only a tiny slither left which could not be removed. The Neurosurgeon (who is one of the top surgeons in his field) said she was a very strong and resilient woman. We are indebted to the Neurosurgeon and Staff at the Queen Elizabeth for saving her life. This has been proven over the recovery periods of the past few months.

Having discussed this between us and with my employer (Esteem Training). We have decided to pay back by holding this charitable event on May's behalf.

So, on the 18th June 2025, It will be the big 18 challenge. With first tee off time at 9am.

We would like to thank all donators and supporters for their kindness and willingness to give up their Wednesday to support the event.
