Story
2025 has been a challenging year for many, and the support of organisations like Marie Curie remains vital for individuals and families facing end-of-life care or coping with bereavement. To ensure this essential care continues for everyone who needs it, the charity must keep raising vital funds.
We are therefore aiming to raise £6,450 by undertaking the Great Wall Discovery Trek in China from 18 to 26 October 2025. This is not just an epic hike - it’s a journey through history, terrain, and personal meaning.
🏞 The Trek
Over 9 days, we’ll trek through the Yan Mountains, following the path of the Great Wall from just north of Beijing, across restored and unrenovated sections, toward Beijing itself.
Expect 4–7 hours of walking per day, we’ll conquer over 10,000 uneven steps and tackle steep ascents, windy ridge-lines, and crumbling paths in un-renovated sections.
One of the most demanding days is on the Gubeikou section, where we begin with a steep climb and traverse time-worn watchtowers, rewarded with panoramic views across rural China.
Another highlight is the Mutianyu section, including the famed “Heavenly Staircase” - a climb that tests even fit legs.
This trek is extra meaningful to us. After our 2022 fundraising trek to Patagonia, Dad was diagnosed with stage 3 Melanoma. He is now thankfully in remission however it has been a stark reminder of how how crucial care, compassion and support can be in times of illness and has made our commitment to this challenge even stronger. With every step along the Great Wall, we’ll carry his journey with us - and strive to support families facing life’s hardest moments.
If you could make any donation towards the incredible work Marie Curie do it would be greatly appreciated 🌼💙
