We are Redcar and Cleveland’s Children’s Social Work Academy, where we aim to train newly qualified social workers within the authority to be the best social worker they can, to the children and families we work with and support. We created our team back in December 2022, we officially launched the academy in January 2023. As an academy and local authority, we care very strongly for the children and young people that we work with and support.

Every child deserves having their own identity, having their own set of personal belongings; their favourite bits & pieces, and no child should ever have to pack these things into a black bin bag. Sadly, this is the reality for some of our most vulnerable children and young people.

Madlug was founded in 2015 by Dave Linton. A man whose only experience in the luggage industry was bags of enthusiasm. He was heartbroken when he learned that most children in care have their belongings moved in a bin bag. In that moment, Dave set out to do something about it. With £480, he started Madlug and came up with our ‘Buy one, Wear one, Help one’ approach. With every bag purchased, a pack-away travel bag goes to a child in care. We’d like to raise as much money as possible for Madlug bags to support children and young people to carry their precious belongings in, if the unexpected happens.

To raise this money, we’ll be doing a team-trek from Redcar to Saltburn along the beach, and then back again. Walking through sands and countryside, everyone on the team will be taking part in raising money to ensure that every child we work with and support, is able to carry their belongings in a proper bag if and when this is needed.
