Story
12 yrs post injury, myself and a truly wonderful team of family and friends are taking on the challenge of getting me up a mountain. Hoping to show what is still possible as a wheelchair user. And it’s not just any mountain, it’s the biggest in Wales, Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon). I’m petrified and excited in equal measure.
Ever since I squished my spinal cord I have yearned to climb a mountain again. To put on a pair of walking boots, a woolly hat, some waterproofs and just trudge up a long old track, towards an impressive natural peak far in the distance. I miss being in the elements, feeling the cold on my face, climbing up alongside grazing, nonchalant sheep, watching birds swoop below me and, most of all, the feeling of exhilaration and great achievement when reaching the peak.
When I was a patient in the Wales spinal cord injury centre I would never have dreamed this would be possible again. I missed being in the outdoors so much and we didn’t have any natural space to enjoy during our rehabilitation. Horatio’s Garden has changed that - providing incredible, fully accessible, peaceful gardens for patients to spend time taking in the wonders of nature once again and perhaps to spend time dreaming about challenges ahead and what they can continue to achieve.
Visit Horatiosgarden.org.uk to find out more and if you are able to donate to this incredible challenge then we would all be hugely grateful. Thank you.
