Amber's fundraiser for The Bumblebee Children's Charity

Amber Smith is raising money for The Bumblebee Children's Charity

Larking Gowen Ipswich Half Marathon 2025 · 21 September 2025 ·

The Bumblebee Children’s Charity is a specialist centre working together with families to support babies and young children with physical difficulties taking part in a fun filled sensory programme. Families do not pay for this service. The Bumblebee Children’s Charity incorporates all aspects of the child’s development (physical, cognitive, social and emotional) into its programme. Every child has different needs, so the programme is designed around the individual child and related to his or her age and abilities. The staff team are always there to guide and support. Parents/primary carers work with their child, usually as part of a group, using equipment, toys and songs to make the tasks enjoyable and productive. It is important that the parent and child are involved together in the learning process and all skills learned are closely related to those which serve a purpose at home.

I am going to run (and walk, let's be realistic) the Ipswich Half Marathon 2025 raising money for Bumblebees Children's Charity.

Bumblebees Children's Charity is an independent pre-school for children who have difficulties with movement and coordination.

Bumblebees relies on donations and fundraising events to be able to offer wonderful sessions for the children who need it most!

For us, it means we take our son Charlie once a week for a 1.5hr free session, where the children sing a welcome song, do movements and exercises through songs and stories, take part in a sensory activity before relaxing in the sensory room to reflect on their session.

We get an online journal each week, filled with pictures and an observation summary which is so special for us. It means me and Sam can see what Charlie has done, what he's working towards and what he's enjoyed each week. Especially important to us as Charlie normally attends with his auntie or Nanny while we are at work.

Bumblebees is a place where we feel supported and welcome. We are amongst children of similar abilities, who are also facing similar difficulties and are on a non-typical path through childhood. We can relax amongst others who understand what we may be going through and can offer advice from their personal experiences.

Our Charlie is 2 years old and has Global Development Delay, non-verbal, Beckwith-Widemann Syndrome, exercise and viral induced asthma and a heart condition. On the outside, Charlie looks like a typical 2-year-old until people realise he cannot talk or communicate and is still learning to walk and learning to do basic skills like feed himself. Charlie's childhood is filled with lots of appointments and seeing different specialists to help us best support him and meet his needs. Therefore, a place like Bumblebees is so important, where everyone is understanding, able to accommodate Charlie and help Charlie thrive!

Any money raised will be so important and greatly appreciated by Bumblebees. I would like to set the amount at £1,000.
