Story
Dear friends and fam,
Thanks so much for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page. As some of you may know, we as a family have been involved in the foundation of a charity - Alma Mater Education (www.almamatereducation.org) - and secondary school in Ghana, Wioso Senior High. Evie and I will be doing a little (so-called “super sprint”) triathlon on 4 June to raise money for the charity. We are incredibly proud of what has been achieved at the school in the last 8 years:
1. We have built classrooms, dormitories, labs and kitchens.
2. We have developed a 25-acre farm, providing fresh organic food for our students.
3. We have become the highest-achieving school in the district of Ahafo Ano. Our pass rate has increased from 56% in the first year to 97.5% this year, all down to the hard work and dedication of our teachers.
4. We are currently educating 270 students at the school, and 330 have already graduated.
5. We have established scholarships for 18 students in agriculture, midwifery and other degrees.
6. We have, together with our partner the Tony Garrn Foundation, set up a health centre and maternity unit in the local village of Wioso.
7. We support 40 members of staff and their families, and are one of the largest employers in the area.
However, rampant inflation at 40% and an increased number of students (due to our reputation and successes) has left us in urgent need of funding to tide us over for the next six months. In September we are confident of financial support from the Ghana Education Service, which would cover a large proportion of our staff and student costs.
We are now asking for your support. To give you an idea of our costs:
Each student costs £42 per month/approx £500 per year (covering education, boarding, meals, pastoral care and sporting activities).
But any amount you can give will make a vital difference to our students’ lives.
Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure.
Do let me know if you'd like more information about the school or charity.
Thank you so much, and wish us well!
Katharina & Evie
