Story
On 24th May, I’ll be running the Edinburgh Half Marathon as part of the Edinburgh Marathon Festival for Beat, the UK’s leading eating disorder charity. Beat supports individuals and families through helplines, online support, and education, helping people access the treatment and guidance they need.
In 2024, I was diagnosed with anorexia, which completely took over my life. It impacted both my physical and mental health, caused me to miss school, and forced me to stop playing football and doing the things I enjoy. During recovery, I was also diagnosed with bulimia, and there was a time I truly didn’t believe I would make it back to school, sit my GCSEs, have a 'normal' relationship with food and regain my life back. At my lowest point, I attempted to take my own life and it was at this point when I was sat in hospital with my mam and dad I truly realised how bad I had gotten and that recovery was something that was no longer an option and is something I am strong enough to do.
Since choosing recovery, I’ve returned to school, passed my GCSEs, started sixth form, rebuilt friendships, travelled, ate lotsssss of yum food and regained my life. Recovery isn’t linear and it’s still a daily challenge, but it is possible — and it’s the best decision I’ve ever made and a decision I'm forever grateful for.
Eating disorders are the deadliest mental illness, with around 10,200 deaths estimated each year. That’s why support from charities like Beat is so vital. This half marathon isn’t just a physical challenge — it represents how far I’ve come in a year as this time last year I was physically unable to run. If you’re able to donate, even a small amount would mean the world and will help others get the support that changed my life. Any donations are much appreciated.
Thank you so much-Amelia :)
