For those of you that know me, you’ll know that I did a running challenge in 2021 where I aimed to run a mile a day for the remaining 334 days of the year (Instagram and Facebook is now: @amileadayin2025 but previous posts are still up if you’re interested in looking). I want to restart this challenge for the rest of 2025, running a mile everyday from the 1st of July until the 31st December (184 days), with each month aiming to raise money for a different charity. I am changing things a little bit this time though by posting every couple of days instead of every single day in order to take some of the pressure and mental load off.

I am aiming to reach £200 per month for each organisation (although it would be great to exceed this) and I will be donating £25 to each chosen charity. The first organisation will be Prostate Cancer UK who will get all the donations for July. I’m sure this charity will resonate with a lot of people in many different ways as 1 in 8 men get prostate cancer, or 1 in 4 in men over 50 and in black men. By raising awareness, funding lifesaving research, campaigning for change and providing helpful support and information, we can support men and their families in getting tested and treated.

In early 2024, my stepdad, Jezz, sadly found out that his twin brother had unfortunately been diagnosed with prostate cancer after showing the major symptoms. He, showing no symptoms at all, was recommended to go to his GP for a general check up and Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test: “My test results revealed that I was slightly above the threshold and they advised me to attend an MRI scan at Addenbrookes Hospital where a tumour was discovered. I was mortified and devastated by the news and mine and my family’s life was completely turned upside down. After various invasive procedures including a biopsy of the tumour, I got the news that the tumour was still confined to my prostate and hadn’t spread. Although this was positive news, it was hard to feel better about the situation as there was still a long way to go in getting treated and then in my recovery.”

“In September last year, I opted for a full prostatectomy to fully remove the cancer. This was successful but as with any invasive surgery, the recovery is still ongoing both physically and psychologically. Without the full support of all of my family, friends and the wonderful support staff of Addenbrookes Cancer Care Unit, I am convinced that I wouldn’t be here today. By sharing my experience, I want to encourage men to get tested in order to save their lives and to help raise funds for ongoing, progressive research”.

As from last week, Jezz reached the 9 month clear checkpoint and is continuing to recover and improve from his surgery. Unfortunately, the harsh truth is that this story is one of many and one man dies from prostate cancer every 45 minutes and 12,000 each year. Although Prostate Cancer UK have invested over £100 million since they set up to help unravel the complexities of prostate cancer, there is much more to do and every pound counts in helping reduce the lives lost each year.
