Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
On the 24th of August, I will be walking 25km to raise funds for Wayanad.
More than 10,000 people have been affected by massive landslides across parts of the southern Indian state of Kerala. The landslides struck near the towns of Meppadi and Wayanad in the early hours of 30 July while families slept, leaving up to 4,000 people trapped in their own homes.
Rescue efforts are under way to free those trapped by the landslides.
So far, 162 people have been confirmed dead and another 200 have been injured. Local authorities have also reported that 89 people are missing. More than 3,000 people have been displaced across 45 relief camps.
The worst disaster in Kerala for 6 years
The destruction caused to vital infrastructure has been huge in the affected areas. Continuous heavy rain has caused torrents of mud and water to sweep through parts of Mappadi and Wayanad.
Houses and roads have been swept away, while some schools have suffered significant damage.
The combination of landslides, uprooted trees and floodwaters have left whole villages covered in mud and debris.
It is the worst disaster to hit Kerala since 2018.
Human Welfare Trust is supporting the local response
Working through one of our partners in India, they are providing funding to support a response to assist those affected by the landslides.
Our local partner will be delivering humanitarian packages to families affected by the floods and landslides.
These packages will include food and hygiene kits, along with other important items based on Human Welfare needs assessments.
Help us continue our vital work to support communities in India and other countries affected by disasters around the world.
