Story

A Miracle Worth Celebrating – Supporting St Helier Hospital ITU

On 28th February 2026, our lives changed forever.

What started as severe food poisoning after a meal out, quickly became every family's worst nightmare.

Udhyam Amin was rushed to St Helier Hospital critically ill. Within minutes of arriving, his condition deteriorated dramatically and he suffered a cardiac arrest.

Thanks to the incredible emergency team, he was successfully resuscitated before being intubated, placed on a ventilator and transferred to the Intensive Therapy Unit (ITU).

We were told he was the sickest patient in the hospital.

The doctors warned us that he might not even survive the journey from Resus to ITU.

He had developed overwhelming sepsis, his body was shutting down, and he was in multi-organ failure. We were told he had only hours to live.

In a matter of moments, our world fell apart.

Nothing prepares you for hearing the words that the person you love may not make it through the day.

We stood by his bedside completely helpless, praying for a miracle while preparing ourselves for the unimaginable.

But while we feared the worst, the incredible team at St Helier Hospital ITU never stopped believing.

The doctors, nurses, healthcare assistants, physiotherapists and every member of the ITU team worked tirelessly, day and night, using every ounce of their expertise, compassion and determination to save Udhyam's life. They cared for him with extraordinary dedication, but they also cared for us. They comforted us through endless uncertainty, answered every question with kindness, celebrated every tiny improvement with us and gave us hope when hope seemed impossible to find.

Against all the odds, Udhyam survived.

After weeks in an induced coma, the moment he opened his eyes felt nothing short of a miracle.

As many people now lovingly joke, he's a cat with nine lives.

But surviving was only the beginning.

After weeks in intensive care, with countless setbacks and small victories, he had to learn to walk again, learn to speak clearly again, learn to feed himself again, and slowly rebuild the strength that sepsis had stolen from him. His organs gradually began to recover, one by one.

Every smile, every word, every step, every mouthful of food became a milestone we celebrated.

Those moments were only possible because of the unwavering care, skill and dedication of the teams.

Today, Udhyam is back with his family and friends, living life with a gratitude that words can barely express. Every laugh we share, every family meal, every celebration and every new memory is a gift that almost never happened.

We know, without any doubt, that we owe his life to the remarkable team at St Helier Hospital.

This fundraiser is our family's way of saying thank you.

No amount of money could ever repay what they gave us—the chance to have our husband, dad, brother and friend back. But we hope that together we can give something back to the people who gave us everything.

Every donation, no matter how large or small, will go directly to St Helier Hospital to help provide equipment, facilities and resources that will support the care of future critically ill patients and the families who stand beside them, hoping for the same miracle that we were blessed to receive.

If our story touches you, please consider making a donation or sharing this page.

One day, another family may find themselves standing where we once stood—terrified, heartbroken and desperately hoping for another chance. Together, we can help ensure that the incredible team at St Helier Hospital ITU has the resources they need to continue performing miracles and giving families the greatest gift imaginable: more time with the people they love.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for every message, every prayer, every act of kindness and every donation.

You are helping us turn one family's miracle into hope for many others.

With love and endless gratitude,

The Amin Family
