Story
For those of you who don’t know me, i am the senior clinical nurse specialist in the Blood & Marrow Transplant and Cell Therapy team at University Hospital Southampton. I work closely with patient who have blood cancers or haematology disorders who require stem cell transplants and cellular therapy in Southampton Hospital. We are a regional centre who take patients from 14 referring centres across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight but are in desperate need of extending/expanding our 21 bedded transplant unit. We have set up a charity - called ‘Room with a view’. We are needing to refit the ward and aiming also expand/renovate additional beds to the unit. We would also like to make a safe outside space where patients and families can go, and leave their isolation rooms to feel the fresh air on their faces and actually leave their rooms without fear of infection.
This is something which is extremely close to my heart, our patients are hugely immunosuppressed throughout their treatment and are required to stay in their isolation room for 6 weeks. It would be amazing to be able to offer these patients a comfortable and practical space to spend their hospital stay in.
I have decided to set my self a challenge of swimming a marathon 42.195 kilometers (26.2 miles), meaning a marathon is roughly 1688 lengths in a 25-meter pool over the next 12 weeks! that’s 140 lengths a week…..!
I feel this is the least i can do seeing what our patients and their families experience on a day to day basis.
I’m asking if you could please donate to our amazing cause (i know financial times are tough).
