When stroke strikes, part of your brain shuts down. And so does a part of you. Life changes instantly and recovery is tough. But the brain can adapt. Our specialist support, research and campaigning are only possible with the courage and determination of the stroke community.

Story

On the 11th of May, members of the Radiology Department will be lacing up our running shoes for a special cause, taking on the challenge of running between hospitals across the Belfast Trust. Starting at the Mater Hospital and finishing at the Royal Victoria Hospital, we will cover the route in support of the Stroke Association, marking Stroke Awareness Month this May. We aim to raise both funds and awareness for the life-saving work carried out by the charity, while highlighting the importance of early detection, treatment, and support for stroke survivors.

Stroke remains a significant health concern in Northern Ireland, with approximately 3,000 individuals admitted to hospitals annually due to stroke-related incidents.

The Stroke Association plays a vital role in supporting stroke survivors and their families across Northern Ireland. Working in partnership with Health and Social Care Trusts, the charity offers a range of services designed to aid recovery and improve quality of life. These include the Stroke Recovery Service, which provides personalized support and guidance, and the STEPS program, offering free, professional one-to-one emotional support counselling for stroke survivors, carers, and relatives . Additionally, the Stroke Association facilitates community support groups, communication assistance, and regular post-stroke reviews to ensure ongoing care . Beyond direct services, the organization actively collaborates with government and health leaders to implement the Stroke Action Plan, aiming to enhance stroke care services throughout the region . Through these comprehensive efforts, the Stroke Association remains committed to helping individuals rebuild their lives after a stroke.
