Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
For a while, we had concerns regarding my Granny Jean’s health, and in July 2023, my Granny received her Parkinson’s diagnosis. Parkinson’s is not an easy disease to diagnose, and for months we were unsure why she was getting more unstable on her feet, struggling with getting upstairs and carrying bags. After 18+ months, she finally got her diagnosis, and was able to start medication to slow down her symptoms.
Parkinson’s UK were able to support our family by offering advice and education on the disease, and emotional support to my Granny. They also supported her by finding her a movement class which offers specialist exercises to people with Parkinson’s. While attending this class, Jean has met many people going through similar challenges. Small things which we take for granted are incredibly difficult (if not impossible) for people living with Parkinson’s; challenges like cleaning a window, making a cup of tea and getting into a car. My Granny is lucky to have my grandpa there to support her, but many people don’t have anyone to help.
2 people every hour are told they have Parkinson’s, and 1 in 350 adults have Parkinson’s in the UK which equals over a million people experiencing the challenging symptoms. The main 3 symptoms are tremors, stiffness and slowness of movement. However, research has found everyone has different challenges and there is over 40 different symptoms including sleep troubles, memory loss and mental health issues.
Charities like Parkinson’s UK are struggling to fund vital research which could find better treatment and hopefully a cure. £1055 will ensure hospitals can provide medication on time, £770 will pay for an MRI scan for an hour to help researchers understand the brain better, and £145 will pay for 5 advisers for an hour to offer support to patients.
In May, I will be running a total of 100 miles (160km) to raise as much money as possible for Parkinson’s. I will be running at least 5k every night (and teaching Year 3 full time) to get to my goal. I will be doing my final 10k on Morecambe promenade Monday 27th May with my Grandpa (84 years young) cycling by my side.
Please be kind and donate as much as you can to support Granny and other people living with Parkinson’s.
