Story
I am raising money for London Autism Group to support their mission to provide vital services for individuals on the autism spectrum and their families.
The London Autism Group Charity (LAG) strongly advises against the use of therapies that target behaviors, specifically Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) and Positive Behaviour Support (PBS). They believe these approaches are rooted in the Medical Model, which focuses on changing the autistic individual, rather than promoting societal acceptance and understanding as advocated by the Social Model.
Critics of ABA and PBS, including many autistic advocates, argue that these methods often aim to suppress or eliminate behaviors intrinsic to an individual's autistic identity, potentially leading to negative outcomes such as masking, which is associated with poor mental health and increased suicidality. Concerns have also been raised about the ethical implications and the quality of evidence supporting these interventions.
Donations could fund programs that offer:
•Educational Resources – Helping families and caregivers better understand autism and access crucial information.
•Support Services – Offering support groups, counseling, and resources to individuals with autism and their families.
•Awareness Campaigns – Raising public awareness about autism to foster understanding and inclusivity in communities.
•Specialized Programs – Developing tailored services to improve the quality of life for people with autism, such as therapy, job support, and social skills training.
Thank you for your help.
