Our mission is to improve the welfare of people held in detention by offering friendship and support and advocating for fair treatment. We do this by visiting individuals, as well as working with other organisations to raise awareness of the call for a 28 day time limit to detention.

Story

2025 is the tenth anniversary of Refugee Tales. Since 2015, Refugee Tales walkers have made a large scale walk every summer in solidarity with refugees, asylum seekers and people who have been held in immigration detention.

This year we're off round London for 5 days in July. Starting at Southwark on 9th July, we're heading anti-clockwise, ending at Wimbledon on 13th July. We're expecting lots of views, conversations, stories and music.

The reason we do this? To raise awareness of the impact of indefinite immigration detention. And hopefully raise some money too.

Please donate if you can.

Everything that I raise through this page will be used for supermarket vouchers or emergency accommodation post-detention for people who would otherwise be sleeping on the streets.

GDWG is a small charity that makes a big difference to people held in immigration detention at Gatwick and after detention too. People in detention are held indefinitely and the uncertainty of how long they will be detained has a terrible impact on mental and physical health. For over 25 years GDWG visitors have been offering friendship to strangers, bearing witness to the realities of detention and making weekly visits to people who would otherwise be isolated. The stories of people who have been detained are shared in four volumes of 'Refugee Tales' published by Comma Press and every year on a long walk the stories are shared in evening events.
