Andrea's fundraiser for NARCOLEPSY UK

The Strava Segment Challenge in Bury St Edmunds · 14 March 2025
I've lived with Narcolepsy since 1995, and, on no medication I've been focusing on keeping physically fit and healthy using the Strava app to keep me motivated.
Narcolepsy is a chronic neurological disorder that affects the brain's ability to control sleep-wake cycles. People with narcolepsy may feel rested after waking, but then feel very sleepy throughout much of the day. They often experience sudden urges to sleep, and sometimes also have a sudden loss of muscle tone known as cataplexy.
My challenge is to complete as many as 50 Strava segments running and cycling in Bury St Edmunds in one day. I am doing this on Friday March 14th (World Sleep Day). To complete this I aim to run and cycle for a session, go home for a short sleep and then do another 2 or 3 sessions with sleeps in between.
Narcolepsy UK exists to support people with narcolepsy, cataplexy and idiopathic hypersomnia, their friends and families.
They do this through providing information and support. In 2024, they helped almost 400 people, obtained over £1.2m in benefits and housing support, as well as presenting to 80 schools with information, advice, and assisting in procuring EHCP awards.
They actively campaign for greater understanding of narcolepsy, and how to cope with, and assist those with the condition, as well as providing information on drugs availability.
They do not receive any support from government, but they are able to do this work as a consequence of the fund raising carried out by their supporters.
