Andrea's fundraiser for Sheffield Open Heart Club

Andrea Hansel-Hides is raising money for Sheffield Open Heart Club

Round Sheffield Race 27 June 2026

The Sheffield Open Heart Club (SHOC) was started in 1984 by patients, relatives and staff at the Northern General Hospital. SHOC has a team of volunteers, all of whom have undergone cardiac surgery themselves, and who are therefore in a good position to speak about things from a patient and relative’s point of view both before and after surgery. SHOC provides specialised equipment and items for the comfort and benefit of cardiac patients on the Chesterman Wing at the Northern General Hospital through fundraising and the donations it receives. SHOC volunteers visit patients on the Chesterman Wing prior to heart surgery to share their experience and answer questions about their surgery and recovery helping to allay patient’s fears. Volunteers attend pre-surgery information sessions for patients at the hospital as well as visit the wards. They respond to patient/relatives’ questions about ‘what it was like for them’. SHOC volunteers receive regular support and guidance from professional staff working within the Chesterman Wing and also as a Partnership Organisation to the Hospital Trust Volunteer Service. SHOC is a registered charity and affiliated to the British Heart Foundation

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I’m raising funds to improve service provision for Cardia Patients having undergone Cardiac surgery at the Northern General Hospital Heart Centre of Excellences, Chesterman 4 ward and their SHOC team.

Over a year ago in February 2025 I underwent open heart surgery for mechanical heart valve replacement with 2 subsequent operations due to complications. I spend a lot of time on Chesterman 4 ward and relishes the provision of SHOC volunteers and the family and patients room. Their input and the facilities made the stay a little more comfortable and I like to raise funds to improve service provision further!

On Saturday 27 June 2026, almost exactly 1 year post my 2nd operation I run the “ RSR”

Round Sheffield Race and I am proud to say I completed the race with a little help of my friends on one of the hottest days in the UK! We DID It!

The RSR is a 11 stage multi terrain trail race and walk between the stages. It is half marathon length and completed finishing a total of 24 km around the lovely and scenic edges of Sheffield.
