Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood ( AHC) is an ultra-rare neuro-developmental disorder affecting less than 1 in a million people. The AHC champions as they are known are faced with frequent, varying episodes of paralysis, abnormal eye movements, painful muscle stiffness (dystonia), sometimes seizures, developmental and cognitive delays and abnormal muscle movements. The severity of AHC and the types of episodes that can vary between individuals, the first symptoms occurring before 18 months old. Anya, the daughter of my friends Katherine and Abishek is one of only a few children who have this condition in the UK. Ongoing research is vital to further develop understanding of AHC and work towards more effective treatments.
In 2021 I developed Long Covid. In attempt to help my recover, I bought a static bike to try to keep myself moving at a very basic level. To keep myself motivated, in July 2021, I set myself the target of very slowly cycling the equivalent of the mens " Tour de Yorkshire" (612.5km) to raised money for AHC.
It has taken a while, but I am pleased to say that the finish line is nearly in sight! I am hoping to raise a further £133, the number of kilometres still to go, between International AHC day ( 18th January 2026) and Rare Disease Day ( 28th February 2026). I know many people very kindly donated to my cycle back in 2021, but if you could spare me the cost of a "virtual coffee" to help get me over the line by 28th February so I can raise a little more for this wonderful charity, I would be very grateful.
