Story
Hello and thank you for visiting my page.
I am attempting to cycle 10,000 miles this year (that's 30 miles a day every day) in my own time, then start work, working a 40+ hour week, so this is going to be a challenge and a half.
In loving memory of my grandfather Harold Westlake who was sadly taken whilst volunteering at his local church (Rose Hill Methodist Church)
He was the type of man who had time for everybody, a careful listener, (that was because he was a bit deaf as well), kind with his words, respectful, a true gentleman.
Many times he would visit his growing patch in his garden, fill up his wheelbarrow and by the time he got back to the house he had given half of it away to his neighbours.
He was decent, honest, caring, very generous and adored by his loving family, friends and of course his neighbours, a true inspiration for us all.
I distinctly remember walking into the church with my family and being strong to show I am in control of my emotions, but when I walked in and saw so many people there to pay their respects, the church was packed with many people outside, I completely fell apart and cried uncontrollably as I was so overwhelmed by the amount of people that came to pay their respects, it was a moment that changed me forever. If I can be just 10% of what my grandfather was then I will be happy with that
But this is also for all those who have a heart condition, be it mild or severe, so money can go into research to help everyone, so they can continue living with their condition with surgery or the right medications, or a mixture of both. My own father suffered a heart attack not so long ago, medication is helping him as are the BHF.
If you are local to Newbury, you can pop into my store (Toolstation, The Paddocks, Hambridge Road) and donate by cash or card, with every penny going to The British Heart Foundation.
I will normally be outside on the bike if you would like to say hello. My challenge is to ride 10,000 miles from the 2nd January to the 31st December 2026. If it is raining, let's be honest, it is England and it rains a lot, so I will be in the delivery bay as the bike is powered by electricity, it has a 9Kg flywheel and it's going to take a lot of effort to do this, but every penny raised goes directly to BHF.
Thank you for reading this, take care, stay well and have a lovely day.
As of 5th February 2026, 1050 miles completed with £1534 raised so far, so thank you for all the donations, every penny does make a difference
