In 2021, I was diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) — a type of blood cancer that, while treatable, is currently incurable. Hearing the word leukemia changed everything. It’s something you never expect to become part of your life, but once it does, everything shifts — from how you live day to day to how you see the future.
CLL is the most common form of adult leukemia in the UK and other developed countries. It affects a type of white blood cell called lymphocytes, which normally help the body fight infection. In people with CLL, these cells grow uncontrollably and build up in the blood, bone marrow, and lymph nodes, gradually weakening the immune system and crowding out healthy cells.
For many, including myself, CLL is a lifelong condition. While some can live for years without needing treatment, others require ongoing monitoring, therapy, and emotional support. Living with CLL means living with uncertainty — not knowing when the disease might progress, or how it might affect your quality of life.
That’s why I’m raising funds: to support research into better treatments, to improve support services for those living with the disease, and to contribute to the hope that one day, we may find a cure.
