60th Birthday "Fun" Run for the Alzheimer's Society
September marks my 60th birthday. Apparently, at some point, I mentioned to my wife that I'd "like" to run another marathon before I'm too old. Christmas arrives, and I find I've been entered into the Altra Yorkshire Marathon 2025. Unfortunately for Heather, I've roped her into doing it with me.
Those that know me, know I've been running for 40-odd years, but my last race was over 25 years ago. In my head, I'm still aiming for that elusive sub-three-hour marathon, but unfortunately, my body says aim for four-and-a-half hours instead. Either way, I intend to complete the 26.2 miles on the 19th October (one way or another).
Why the Alzheimer's Society? Many will already know I've written 3 memoirs. Part of the reason was to leave a record of my past (from the horse's mouth) for my daughters. Another part was the fear of forgetting. Everybody is living longer, and with that comes an increased risk of dementia and Alzheimer's. Nobody knows who it'll strike, nor when. Should I be one of the unlucky ones, I'll have my own record to remind me. But, what about others? By supporting the Alzheimer's Society you are helping those already suffering, and helping to fund research into finding treatments and cures. Your donations go towards funding helplines, providing loneliness support through companion calls, and providing interventions in certain extreme cases. It also goes towards pushing government to address care home issues where up to 70% of residents suffer with dementia.
So, whether you want to support me personally, and wish me a happy 60th birthday, or whether you care about the issues surrounding dementia and Alzheimer's, this is the perfect opportunity to donate to a good cause. It doesn't matter how much or how little you donate (every amount is needed), and you can donate anonymously if you choose.
I'll update the page with training progression as days go by, but why wait? Donate now, or donate nearer the day. Either way, "THANK YOU" for your help.
