Story

MEN MATTER SCOTLAND

As many of you will know my best buddy Gavin took his own life on February the 11th this year. His family and friends still miss him terribly.

In memory of Gavin I’m going to run the GREAT SCOTTISH RUN on October 1st to raise funds and awareness for MEN MATTER SCOTLAND.

MEN MATTER SCOTLAND is a charity based in Glasgow who provide vital help and support to men struggling with their mental health. I’ve witnessed first hand the wonderful help and support this charity gives to men in need of it.

It’s Gavin’s family’s belief that had Gavin known about this charity then they might have been able to help him and ultimately save his life.

The last time I saw Gavin was on New Year’s Day. We had a few beers together and fell in to the old routine of laughing about days gone by,and also reminiscing about his Gran, Grandfather and Uncle Ernie who are sadly also no longer with us but provided us with so many funny memories. I never imagined for a moment that day that 6 weeks later Gavin would be gone.

I knew Gavin had an ongoing struggle with his mental health but never at anytime that day did he confide in me that he was REALLY struggling. Even though he saw me as his best friend he still couldn’t reach out to me,probably because he didn’t want to hurt me by telling me how much he was hurting.

So here’s the deal folks. I’m not only shamelessly going ask you for as much money as you can spare but I’m also going to ask you to find MEN MATTER SCOTLAND on Facebook, like their page and share their page to everyone of your family and friends even if they’re not male, as maybe one of your family or friends is really struggling with their mental health like Gavin was but can’t reach out to someone close but would reach out to a stranger. We’re all still hurting from the loss of Gavin but hopefully if you carry out this request your family member or friend will reach out to MEN MATTER SCOTLAND and they will support them through their struggle and show them that they are loved and needed by the people in their lives as Gavin was.

So please dig deep and get sharing!!!

We exist to support All Men’s mental health, improve men's quality of life, expand and enrich men’s connections. We facilitate activities that support positive mental, physical and emotional health and wellbeing for men. We run weekly groups, sessions and activities, facilitated on a peer to peer basis where men can meet in a safe and friendly place, talk openly, be listened to and feel supported without judgment within a confidential setting from people who are equal to you – your peers. Men from all walks of life come together daily/weekly to share their experiences, their struggles and their advice with one another. In our peer support network and groups you are able to talk to other men who have first-hand lived experience of similar situations. Men can come along, take part, have fun, get fit, meet new people. Or men can simply come along, see what we are about and listen without any pressure to talk. This is absolutely fine too.
