Story
Thank you for visiting our Just Giving page. We are two retired veterinary surgeons, Andrew Rafferty and Frank Stephen , calling ourselves Twa Auld Vets. Andrew, 71, was the principal of a practice in Grantown on Spey until he retired in 2024. Frank was a partner in a practice in Thurso until his retirement in 2015.
Together we are planning to walk The Coast to Coast Trail from St Bees in Cumbria to Robin Hood’s Bay in Yorkshire. It passes through three National Parks, The Lake District, The Yorkshire Dales and The North York Moors. The walk is almost two hundred miles and has an ascent the equivalent of climbing Everest. We start on 31st May and finish on 13th June. We are doing it as a sponsored walk in aid of Alzheimer Scotland. Full details of the walk can be found on https://www.coasttocoast.uk
We are walking to support those families whose lives have been changed after a diagnosis of dementia in loved ones. In particular Frank is walking in memory of his wife Moira who died two years ago of vascular dementia. Frank and Moira had great support from family, friends and Alzheimer Scotland when Moira was living with dementia. Frank is also walking in support of his sister, Irene who is living with young onset Alzheimer, showing it is not just a disease of older people. Andrew is walking in support of his vet friend Bill Barr, who was at college with him. Bill is living with dementia and is now in a care home where his wife visits him daily.
Alzheimer Scotland are a charity who help subsidise research, support those with dementia and their carers and campaign for those affected.
