Story
A 40 mile walk from Banstead to Brighton on Saturday 6 July 2024
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
A couple of months ago I noticed a post on LinkedIn by a friend Tom Loseby. Tom was proposing to undertake a 40 mile walk from his home town of Banstead to Brighton pier in order to raise some money and awareness of Parkinson's disease. So after a couple of glasses of wine one Friday evening I agreed to join Tom and a few others in this challenge. It will be a challenge too for someone who suffers so much with blisters when running over much shorter distances. It won't be a case of whether I get blisters, but how many!
Most of us have friends of family that have been affected by this horrible disease and indeed this challenge arose after Tom's own father was diagnosed with Parkinson's. I have copied part of Tom's Just Giving page below as this explains why we are doing this far better than me.
In December 2022, my Dad, Mike, was officially diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. A debilitating illness that effects 18,000 new people a year in the UK alone effecting many well known people such as Muhammed Ali, Michael J Fox and Billy Connolly. Parkinson's takes many forms and has over 40 symptoms including multiple physical issues (tremors & balance being a couple) and cognitive/psychiatric (depression, anxiety & dementia).
For someone like my Dad or anyone that knows him, he has always been one of the loudest and 'brightest lights' in the room so it's been a very difficult time for him and also for his close family to adjust. Having witnessed first hand what impact this disease has had on his quality of life and with the blessing of my Dad to share his story, I am looking to raise as much money possible for Parkinson's UK. Hopefully, the funds we raise will go toward a cure or at the very least providing better treatment to make things easier and enjoy a better quality of life.
To help where I can, I am planning to walk from Banstead Village to Brighton Pier, totalling 40 miles in 1 day! I am inviting anyone who wants to get involved or to support this wonderful cause, join me! Sponsoring the day, I will be providing refreshments half way, with food and drink before setting off again and a 'pack' full of things to help you on your walk. This is an open invitation and if you want to find out more, or participate, please contact me on tom@tmlrecruitment.com
If you can't join the walk or just want to donate, please do so. Any amount, large or small is welcome and will go a long way to aiding the cause.
Thanks, Tom
