7 Marathon Hikes in 7 days for Addenbrooke's New Cancer and Children's Hospitals.

Andrew Walsh is raising money for Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust

Great Wall of China Trek · 7 May 2026 to 18 May 2026 ·

30 fundraisers will take this amazing challenge to trek a remote section of the Great Wall of China, raising vital funds for Addenbrooke's Charitable Trust. This will directly support the ground-breaking care and research we provide at our hospitals.

Story

WHERE AND WHEN?

Starting on Thursday 30th July 2026, I’ll be taking on my biggest challenge yet:

7 marathon-distance hikes in 7 consecutive days

I will be crossing England coast to coast on foot, covering approximately 200 miles from St Bees in Cumbria to Robin Hood’s Bay in Yorkshire.

The route crosses:

- The Lake District

- Yorkshire Dales

- North York Moors

Over the 7 days I’ll face:

- major mountain climbs

- over 10,000 metres of elevation gain

- 10–13 hour days on foot

- difficult terrain

- fatigue with very limited recovery time

WHY?

I’ve chosen to continue taking on these challenges because Addenbrooke’s Hospital saved my life. Their treatment, technology and incredible staff gave me a future I may not otherwise have had.

Now Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust is helping fund:

- a new Cancer Research Hospital

- a new Children’s Hospital

So this is my way of trying to give something back. Every donation will help, so please support Addenbrooke's and me.

WHAT'S THE PLAN?

My Coast to Coast Daily Plan;

Thursday 30th July — Day 1 — St Bees to Rosthwaite

From the Irish Sea into the Lake District mountains.

Friday 31st July — Day 2 — Rosthwaite to Shap

The hardest mountain stage crossing high Lakeland passes and Kidsty Pike.

Saturday 1st August — Day 3 — Shap to Keld

Open moorland, limestone scenery and long remote sections.

Sunday 2nd August — Day 4 — Keld to Richmond

Classic Yorkshire Dales scenery with fast valley trails.

Monday 3rd August — Day 5 — Richmond to Ingleby Cross

A long mental endurance day across rolling countryside.

Tuesday 4th August — Day 6 — Ingleby Cross to Glaisdale

A tough North York Moors stage with steep climbs and exposed terrain.

Wednesday 5th August — Day 7 — Glaisdale to Robin Hood’s Bay

The final push to the North Sea finish line.

JOIN ME ON ROUTE

Friends, supporters and fellow walkers are encouraged to join me for parts of the challenge along the way, or at the start or end of the days.

There will be opportunities to join for:

- shorter walks

- 10k sections

- half-marathon distances

- or even full marathon stages

Joining for part of a day, meeting at a lunch stop, or being there at an evening finish will genuinely make a difference during such a long challenge.

Support on the route — whether walking, meeting along the way, helping with morale or simply spreading the word — will all help keep me moving from coast to coast.

If you’d like to walk part of the route or support along the way, please WhatsApp me on 07813 858219.

Nearly 1 in 2 people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer during their lifetime, and Addenbrooke’s is helping change outcomes for thousands of families every year.

Every donation genuinely helps and means a huge amount to me.

Thank you to everyone who has already supported the journey so far — and the challenge continues.

WHAT HAVE I ALREADY DONE?

For the past several years I’ve been fundraising for Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust through endurance challenges and long-distance events, raising over £12,500 so far.

A couple of years ago I completed multiple ultra-marathon-distance walks across the year, and in 2026 I decided to take things even further and continue supporting Addenbrooke’s in a bigger and more meaningful way.

In May 26 I completed a 5-day trek across a remote section of the Great Wall of China in aid of Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust.

The challenge involved long days trekking steep uphill and downhill sections of the wall, alongside remote mountainous terrain and extreme heat. Physically it was tough, but mentally it became one of the hardest challenges I’ve ever done in ways I didn’t expect.

What started as an individual endurance challenge quickly became a team challenge. Supporting and encouraging each other through difficult moments became just as important as completing the trek itself, and it gave me a huge amount of respect for everyone involved.

That experience pushed me mentally more than I anticipated and reminded me how important resilience, teamwork and support can be when things become difficult... which is why I'd love you to support me in the next part of my fundraising... if you can be there to support me in person that'd be really amazing.
