10 Climbs / 24 Hours/ 1 Cause Join Cardiff & Vale Health Charity by taking part in the 10YFan challenge, taking place on 9th/10th May 2026.

Story

On 9 May, Andy Jones will be taking on the formidable 10yFan

challenge to raise funds for Cardiff & Vale Health Charity

10yFan is a demanding endurance event that sees participants hike

Pen y Fan ten times within 24 hours — a true test of physical fitness,

mental resilience, and determination.

Andy’s decision to take on the challenge follows his family’s

experience of care within Cardiff and Vale. In 2023, Andy’s wife was

diagnosed with a brain tumour and underwent surgery, receiving

outstanding care from Mr Amir Mohammed’s Neurosurgical team,

T4N and the community Brain Injury Team at University Hospital of

Wales. The professionalism, compassion, and support shown by

colleagues throughout her treatment and recovery inspired Andy to

give something back to the services that support patients and

families every day.

While this will be Andy’s biggest challenge to date, he’s no stranger to

pushing himself physically. An avid runner, Andy has previously

completed a trail marathon across Salisbury Plain and is a leader at

Heath Massive Run Club, which meets three times a week at the

Heath Park car park. To prepare, he runs, rows, and rides the Peloton

around four times a week — and is fully committed to completing all

ten climbs.

Andy has been part of Cardiff and Vale Health Board for more than 30 years. He joined as a student nurse in 1992,

qualifying in 1995 and working in Ambulatory Care. As a dual‑qualified adult and children’s nurse, Andy later helped

establish the Cardiff and Vale Orthopaedic Centre (CAVOC). In 2021, he became Director of Nursing for the Children

and Women’s Clinical Board, continuing a long career dedicated to improving care for patients and supporting

colleagues.

Reflecting on his motivation, Andy said:

“10yFan is a chance for me to give something back after seeing first‑hand the incredible care my wife received.

I’ve spent most of my career in Cardiff and Vale and know just how much the Health Charity adds — for patients,

families, and staff alike. Every donation truly makes a difference, and knowing people are supporting me will be a

huge boost when the challenge gets tough. I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who has donated or is planning to

support the hike — thank you.

Funds raised will help Cardiff & Vale Health Charity continue to enhance patient

care, improve hospital environments, and support staff wellbeing across the

Health Board.

Thank you to everyone who has already donated — your generosity is making every

step of this challenge count
