Walking the South Downs Way · 10 August 2024

This year, the 28th October marks the 360th birthday of the Royal Marines Commandos. To celebrate this special birthday, we would love it if you would join us to raise £360 in your own special way - run, walk, cycle, bake - the choice is yours!

Story

In 2014, when I was 71, I walked The South Downs Way and raised some good money for the Royal Marines Charity. In 2022, in my 80th year, I did it again but for another military charity. In August this year, in my 82nd year, I will do it again, this time for the Royal Marines Charity. My sole intention is to raise as much money for the Charity as possible. The South Downs Way is 101 miles long, with a total height gain of 12,600ft.

I joined the Corps in September 1961 and stayed for 34 years. I enjoyed just about every day of it. In that time I served in Singapore, Borneo, Aden, Cyprus, the Falklands, Northern Ireland and North Iraq, spent several winters in Norway, and travelled to over 30 countries on military business. But I also met a great group of people, many of whom are still good friends.

I'm extremely conscious that many members of our Corps, including families, suffer some kind of physical and/or psychological injuries as a direct result of their service. I'm also very aware that the Royal Marines Charity does a fantastic job in helping serving and former members of our family who, for whatever reason, face financial difficulties. The Charity spends a lot of money each year, all of which is donated. So I would like to make a donation, and with your help, let's make it really count.

For 6 days, from 10 August, I'll walk the whole South Downs Way route starting in Eastbourne and finishing at Winchester Cathedral. I very much hope that, with your help, the Royal Marines Charity will benefit considerably.

4th August - 6 days to go - I've done four long training walks recently, all about 15 miles and everything is working as it should. Thanks to everyone that's supported me so far - please don't feel shy about spreading the word!

I hope to update you during the walk ...
