I've been a type 1 diabetic for nearly 30 years and it's been far from easy. I started off injecting and doing finger prick testing, and I didn't really understand what was happening. After several years I was struggling to control hypos and my weight, and after a number of incidents and ambulance rides, I was not in a good place. The turning point was intervention from my wife and advice from the consultant at Mile End Hospital. I started to control the hypos and got sent on a DAFNE course which helped me get to grips with my diet. A few years later I started using an insulin pump and then flash monitoring which was a big help. The real game changer was starting on hybrid closed loop system early last year, which gave me the confidence to start running - and I haven't stopped! Managing exercise with type 1 can be tricky, but with the new treatment technology and the support and advice that's available now, almost anything is possible.
