On the 19th September 2026 I will be swimming over 5 km across the Solent from Stokes Bay (Gosport) to Ryde on the Isle of Wight. The challenge which will involve crossing one of worlds busiest shipping channels through strong tidal currents is in aid of the Ian Pratt MND Foundation. This excellent charity is dedicated to supporting individuals and families confronting the challenges posed by Motor Neuron Disease (MND).

The charity also supports the Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience (SITRAN), channeling vital funds into their pioneering research programs aimed at uncovering effective treatments and, ultimately, a cure for MND.

MND is a fatal, rapidly progressing neurological disease. It attacks the nerves that control movement (motor neurons) so that muscles no longer work. Motor neurons control important muscle activity such as gripping, walking, speaking, swallowing and breathing. This initially leads to weakness and wasting and then, eventually, severe paralysis and breathing difficulties. Mental abilities and senses are not usually affected and therefore patients generally remain aware of their deteriorating physical condition.
