Story
I have been lucky enough to spend 2 months volunteering at Hospitalito Atitlan in Santiago, Guatemala. This is a charity run Hospital which provides outpatient provision and emergency services to an underserved area of the rural Guatemalan community. It has been incredible to learn from the team here.
One aspect I’ve loved has been working with the 'Diabetes Club', which supports the management of Diabetes in women who otherwise may not have access to healthcare provision. We are only able to provide very basic (and usually insufficient) tests and medications. All further medications and testing need to be paid for, which usually is not possible for these women. If you want more technical details, I’ve got a belter of an audit ongoing which you’re very welcome to read.
On June 15th I plan to put my love of running to good use by taking on a tricky 50km around the roads of Lake Atitlan. I’m nervous about this one after a few months of deconditioning, a touch of altitude and numerous hills. Fingers crossed we’ll get through.
All funds raised will be put towards the Diabetes Club to try and enhance the services we are able to provide. For example, £10 covers a set of crucial annual blood and urine tests.
Any donations would be hugely welcomed!
