#TeamWag runners are again taking on the Great North Run, a half marathon, raising funds to enable more special Wag friendships for elderly dog lovers in our communities. Such an amazing experience!

Story

"Loneliness is killing our society."

I first heard these words two years ago at a medical conference in Copenhagen—and they’ve stayed with me ever since. The truth is, this isn’t just a problem in Denmark.

I've worked in the NHS for 13 years, and nearly every day, patients tell me they feel lonely. They miss their loved ones—spouses who have passed away, children who’ve moved to another city or even across the ocean. They long for a warm hug, a friendly face, or simply someone to share a cup of tea with.

I first met the Wag & Company family six years ago when they began visiting the wards of James Cook University Hospital. Today, they continue to raise funds to bring joy, companionship, and comfort—offering friends both with two legs and four—to older, vulnerable dog lovers across our region.

Loneliness and social isolation are chronic problems for the elderly in the North East. Around 50,000 pensioners here are chronically lonely. They're 50% more likely to die prematurely than those with strong social connections. That makes loneliness as deadly as smoking 15 cigarettes a day.

Many of those affected are dog lovers. When they connect with Wag & Company, they don’t just receive a furry companion—they gain a trusted, two-legged friend too.

Nearly 400 incredible Visiting Wag Teams are currently making a difference—from Berwick-upon-Tweed down to Northallerton, across to Brampton, and almost everywhere in between.

I’ve decided to run for Wag & Company because I know firsthand what loneliness feels like. I’ve faced dark times too, and my dogs helped me through them. Today, I’m lucky to share my life with four beautiful dogs who complete my family.

Please help me support this wonderful charity that brings so much warmth, connection, and healing to our communities.

Give whatever you can—every little bit helps.

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.
